Standing Down

The BBC reports that Labour's Jim McGovern is standing down from Westminster at the very last minute with only days to go until the general election which means that the Labour Party's national executive will decide who will fight the Dundee West seat.

Dan Hodges commented on this highly undemocratic practice a little while back which he described as political bungee jumping which effectively denies the local party membership the chance to select their own candidate.

But all of these shenanigans may be academic if the SNP win the Dundee West seat and the bookies say that's a result that is most definitely on the cards.

Election 2015: Jim McGovern will not seek re-election

Labour is looking for a new candidate to fight the Dundee West seat in the general election after Jim McGovern announced he will not be standing for re-election.

Mr McGovern, who had held the seat for ten years, has decided not to seek a third term due to ill health.

It comes less than a week before the deadline for candidates to register.

Stewart Hosie, the SNP MP for Dundee, sent his best wishes to Mr McGovern, and wished him a speedy recovery.
