Many Not the Few

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND - APRIL 20: SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon launches the Scottish National Party manifesto at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, EICA Ratho, on April 20, 2015 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon mounted an audacious 'smash and grab' assault on the Labour Party yesterday while launching the SNP's manifesto for the general election.

The SNP leader had a bold political message reflecting her growing stature appropriate and was confident enough to borrow one of Labour's favourite slogans in promising to deliver 'for the many not the few'.

I can imagine Ed Miliband and Jim Murphy going slightly green at the gills over the forceful, focused and polished manner in which the SNP's message was conveyed, appealing not just to voters in Scotland but to the electorate across the UK.

If you ask me one of the main reasons for the growing public support for the SNP, is that the Westminster Parliament failed to reform itself after the great MPs' expenses scandal: the House of Commons is unrepresentative, the House of Lords is a bloated insult to democracy and parliamentarians are regarded as aloof and unaccountable.

Whatever its failings, the Scottish Parliament is none of these things and the Scottish Government is generally regarded in a positive light having made a decent fist of things for the past eight years while avoiding the all of the pitfalls that have plagued Westminster.

I'm sure the Scottish Labour Party must feel like it's been run over by a truck.
