Tax Havens

The country will breathe s sigh of relief that the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, is threatening to blacklist the fourteen British Overseas Territories (Bots) over their role as tax havens for for UK companies.

For good measure the Crown dependencies of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are in Ed's sights as well, allegedly.

Now the BOTs range from places like Gibraltar to Bermuda to the Pitcairn Islands and, as far as I know, they've been around for as long as I can remember - even during the lifetime of the last Labour Government which was in power with a majority of Westminster MPs for 13 long years between 1997 and 2010.

Yet I can't remember any proposal from Labour during that time to get tough with Gibraltar, for example, which really ought to be handed back to Spain.

So if you ask me, with a general election looming and the prospect of another hung parliament at Westminster, Ed is talking nonsense.
