Sore Thumbs

I wrote a post the other day in which I pointed the vast majority of police officers whose area covers Ferguson, Missouri are white - whereas the bulk of the local population are black.

In fact the figure I gave was 50 out of 53 which means that 94% of the local police force is white in a predominantly black area, in terms of Ferguson at least.

Now I'm quite sure that most people on the 'left' of the trade union movement would be applied by these figures because they mean that an important public institution does not reflect the make-up of the people they are supposed to protect and serve.

In other words, it doesn't make sense and does t inspire public confidence if the police are so thoroughly unrepresentative of the local population.

Yet this is exactly the same situation when it comes to the trade unions and party politics because almost every senior union figure in Scotland is an active supporter of the Labour Party - yet the great majority of ordinary union members vote for other parties including the SNP.

Scottish Labour has maybe less than 10,000 members these days while the SNP's numbers have swelled to over 90,000 - yet still the trade unions at senior level operate like Labour Party closed-shops.

As if to succeed, you've got to be or got to join the Labour Party which is a very sorry state of affairs if you ask me.
