Democracy for Dummies

Here's a remarkable report from The Daily Record which, to my mind, makes the Unite union look like a terrible laughing stock, as if the largest union in the country is being headed up by someone with all the leadership qualities of Worzel Gummidge.

Now this appears to be what passes for democracy inside Unite these days, with union bosses like Len McCluskey and his former flatmate Tom Watson, a Labour MP, telling Unite members how to vote - when they are quite capable of making up their own minds, of course.

What a bunch of arrogant, out-of-touch tossers.

So well done to The Daily Record for exposing what these 'eejits' are up to although I suppose the Labour Party is keeping quiet because Ed Miliband benefited from similar tactics during the 2010 UK Labour leadership election.

But what a joke, I have to say, and you can bet your bottom dollar that a tiny, unrepresentative number of trade union members will even bother to cast their votes which makes the whole exercise a ludicrous and expensive waste of time.

Unless the unions manage to sneak their favoured candidate in by the back door again, in which case I predict there will be 'haw maw', as Glaswegians are fond of saying.

Scottish Labour leadership battle: Unite under fire after telling members to vote for Neil Findlay

By David Clegg - The Daily Record

THE union have sparked fury from their own members after having made a blatant attempt to secure leadership for Neil Findlay and freeze out Jim Murphy

Unite gave members a mock ballot paper instructing them to vote for Findlay

UNITE are under fire from their own members for trying to “stitch up” the Scottish Labour leadership battle.

The trade union sparked fury with a blatant bid to hand the contest to Neil Findlay and freeze out favourite Jim Murphy.

One long-term member said Unite were treating him like a child after he received a mock ballot paper instructing him to tick the box beside Findlay’s name.

Another said general secretary Len McCluskey had learned nothing from the Falkirk selection scandalthat forced Labour leader Ed Miliband to distance himself from the union.

McCluskey publicly condemned Murphy when he stood for the Scottish Labour leadership after Johann Lamont’s resignation.

And Labour MP Tom Watson – a former flatmate of McCluskey – wrote a newspaper article slamming Murphy and urging people to support Findlay.

The union are also understood to have helped bankroll expensive opinion polling to help the Findlay campaign. One Unite member from Glasgow said: “You couldn’t make it up. These people have no interest in helping Scottish Labour or fighting Scottish nationalism.

“All they care about is their own petty little feuds.”

A member from Dundee said: “This is simply embarrassing from Unite. They spend more time stitching up Labour Party contests than standing up for workers in Scotland.”

Unite’s Pat Rafferty said: “We fully comply with Labour rules and those of the independent balloting services who govern elections.”
