Deputy Dawg

So we are, after all, to have an election for Deputy Branch Manager of the Scottish Labour Party.

Anas Sarwar who only a few days ago was in siting he had no intention of standing down has done exactly that, so there is now to be double header contest to elect a new Branch Manager and his or her deputy.

Presumably the Labour Party hierarchy in London 'persuaded' Anas Sarwar that it would look ridiculous if the two top jobs in Scotland were both held by men and worse still if both men were Westminster MPs.

Which is what would have happened if the bookies favourite, Jim Murphy MP, wins the contest and Mr Sarwar had stayed in his post, which he was perfectly entitled to do of course having been elected alongside Johann Lamont back in 2011.

So we will now witness an orgy of democracy inside the Scottish Labour Party or what passes for democracy in the People's Party these days, as Labour's electoral college swings into action.

But the problem for Labour is that the voters have noticed what's going on and they don't like what they see which is why the Party's opinion poll ratings are dropping like a stone while UK leader Ed Miliband is more unpopular than ever north of the border.

Scottish Labour leadership: Sarwar resignation sparks double contest

Anas Sarwar said he was clearing the way for a "new leadership team"

Scottish Labour is seeking both a new leader and a new deputy leader after Anas Sarwar resigned.

The Glasgow Central MP announced on Thursday evening he was standing down from his role as deputy.

He is currently interim leader of the party following Johann Lamont's departure and will remain in that role until her replacement is announced.

Two polls have suggested Labour is on track to lose the vast majority of its Scottish MPs in the general election.

Ms Lamont quit last Friday, accusing Labour's UK leadership of treating Scotland like a branch office.

Mr Sarwar's resignation came after fellow MP Jim Murphy announced he was entering the leadership race against Lothian MSPs Neil Findlay and Sarah Boyack.

Contests for the leadership and deputy leadership will run concurrently.

Mr Sarwar, the MP for Glasgow Central, said: "I have come to a decision I believe is in the best interest of the Scottish Labour Party.

"It's my intention to hand over the leadership to a new team on 13 December.

"I think it's also right that we have a concurrent leadership and deputy leadership election.

"This will allow a Scottish Labour party, its members and affiliates the opportunity to not only elect a leader, but a new leadership team focussed on winning in 2016."
