Popping Pills

The latest pill that has become available on the NHS is one that helps people control and reduce their alcohol intake which is good news in lots of ways with the exception of who should pay for the cost of treatment.

Because the pills which cost £3 a day must save the person using them several times that amount every day, if they are drinking heavily every day, especially if they consume alcohol in the pub.

Which begs the question: "Why should the taxpayer stump up for something that heavy drinkers are perfectly able to pay for themselves?"

Especially as it must save the people concerned a whole pile of money in the process, just like giving up smoking.

Now the drug involved, nalmefene which is branded as selincro, has great potential in Scotland where alcohol abuse is a real problem, but it also throws into stark relief the policy of free prescriptions on the NHS.

Which in this situation doesn't make any sense at all, if you ask me.
