Fight in the Dog

The problem with both Labour and the Tories is that they are both running scared of UKIP over Europe and until they find their voice, Nigel Farage and his cronies will continue to cash in on the anti-politics mood.

So while David Cameron and Ed Miliband have stayed on the sidelines in the great Clegg versus Farage debate, the fact of the matter is that they both have a dog in this fight - which means they should be rolling their sleeves up and getting stuck in.

Now I'm not surprised that Nigel Farage was deemed to have won the big debate with Nick Clegg by a margin of 68% to 27% - or by 57% to 36% - depending on which opinion poll you are inclined to believe.

Because people's views on these issues tend to split along party lines and the Lib Dems have taken a pounding in the polls recently and are currently bumping along somewhere in the low teens or high single figures in terms of the popular vote, again depending on which opinion poll you believe.

The fact that Nick Clegg has rallied 3 or 4 times the number of people to his European banner, compared to those who normally support the Lib Dems sounds like quite a smart political move, if you ask me.

Not least because the voters who normally support the two big parties (Tories and Labour) will always be attracted to the siren voice of of the anti-politics UKIP brigade - especially when their own leaders lack the confidence to enter the fray.
